Competitor Research SEO Case Study – Alpine Comfort

SEO Competitor Research ExpertSEO Competitor Researcher

Alpine Comfort are a small business based in the Swiss Alps that provide a range of luxury accommodation in the Nendaz / Verbier region from their 4 Valleys Chalet Rental website.

The Problem:

The company’s joomla based Alpine Comfort website was losing traffic on a daily basis and was performing poorly when it came to getting those all important enquiries and bookings. It looked likely that website visits and online sales were slowing down in the already quiet summer season due to better designed and optimised competitor websites that were taking Alpine’s share of the market.

The Solution:

Working via Skype and by sharing files and folders using dropbox, I set out a plan that over a period of a few months, would tackle a number of the main technical issues the site faced, provided hands-on web development fixes and introduced a small SEO campaign that included competitor and keyword research, a new content strategy, hands-on optimisation and training for one of the company staff.

Working first on fixing a large volume of usability issues including menus where numerous links click through to the same duplicate pages and repairing broken links to pages that had been re-named since allowed us to get down to some design improvements including breaking up and formatting large blocks of text throughout the site and then onto SEO.

We used the competitor and keyword research data to map a suitable phrase to each existing page and worked through optimising the meta and page content of each page. In addition to optimising the existing pages we went ahead to develop a new information section that would hold valuable new pages relating to subjects the company staff new about, in order to build authority and trust as well as increase traffic from the new pages.

  • Twice the search visits as same period in previous season
  • First page for dozens of competitive keyword phrases
  • Competitor incoming link analysis and recommendations
  • Allows the team to create optimised content in-house

The Results

The half a day per week campaign included site fixes, competitor research and a small SEO campaign that doubled visits from the search engines.

The Conclusion

By using pro SEO tools such as Wordtracker and SEOMoz’s “open site explorer” to extract keywords and data on incoming links to competing sites we were able to identify lots of missed traffic from related search terms. By visually reviewing the design, quality of writing, marketing message and usability of the competitor sites we were able to create a list of improvements the team could look into implementing in on their own site in-house.

By explaining the SEO cycle of keyword research, content creation, optimisation and rankings/traffic review, working through examples and by listing a number of highly searched for phrases that would serve as the focus of new each article, the team were able to add optimised content on an ongoing basis in order to attract traffic that was being collected and monetized by their competitors.
